John 5 DT 6.10.09 by Kelly Kang (Gracepoint Fellowship Church – Berkeley):
John 5:17
17Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”
My Father is always at work. If this is the case, why do I get so anxious? Why do I feel like I have to take matters into my own hands when things don’t go well? Why do I get so frustrated about areas that I feel very hopeless and helpless about? Why do I sometimes feel so alone? Why do I despair? Why do I feel like I’m never going to overcome my current struggle?
I remember watching The Lord of the Rings and feeling safe every time Gandalf was around. No matter what the situation was, when Gandalf was around, I
felt more safe and secure for the hobbits. But every time he wasn’t around, I anxiously waited for him to appear quickly and as soon as he did, I would breathe a sigh of relief.
I have someone who is greater than Gandalf ever was in the lives of those hobbits. How much more should I feel safe and secure when I have Immanuel God who is always with me and is always at work!
Lord, please forgive me for worrying and fretting over difficult situations. Lord, help me to rest in the fact that you are with me and that you are always actively at work in my life as well as in the lives of those that I feel helpless about.
Thank you for sharing. I too felt such hope that my Father is always at work.

I agree, as I see my Father is at work, I need to trust in him instead of being anxious or worried. I can have hope in the midst of my struggles and others as well.

Thank you for posting. Looking back in hindsight, it’s sometimes easier to see my Father at work, but I too need the faith to trust and rest in God in the process of going through some struggle.

Thanks for sharing. This verse reminds me of the hymn, This is My Father’s World, especially the third stanza:
This is my Father’s world. O let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done:
Jesus Who died shall be satisfied,
And earth and Heav’n be one.

My Father always at work gives me motivation to also be hardworking, but also a sense of peace to not be anxious about time, as He is always in control.

I was really blessed with the fact that God is always at work, so that there is no basis for feeling hopeless, cynical or frustrated. Thanks for sharing.

what a relief it is that all is not dependent on whether I am at work, but on Him being at work.

thank you so much for your simple post. If the Father and the Son are always at work, then how very much I have no reason to be anxious, ever.

I too was impacted and blessed by this verse. It’s a truth that I want to be aware of each new day.

Hello Kelly, thank you for your sharing. I think the illustration really helped a lot, how true when Gandalf was around, the viewer feels safe, and how all the more God in my life needs to be that source of peace and trust.
